December 2006 Exhibit:
Reproduction French Dolls

The Post Library is pleased to announce a special addition to its annual display of
antique Christmas decorations from the Winfred and Elizabeth Post collection. This
month also features a dazzling showcase of reproduction 19th century French dolls
collected by Don and Becky Freeman.  Life-size bisque dolls are exquisitely attired in
historic costume and arranged in life-like settings.  For instance, an infant decked out
in a christening gown rides in a 19th century baby carriage.  The original dolls were actually
used as mannequins in 19th century France to advertise the latest Paris fashions. The
collection demonstrates the variations in the bisque molds and hand painting used
to craft the delicately-featured faces.  Famous French doll makers included in the exhibit
are Bru, Delcroix, Gaultier, Halopeau, Jumeau, Schmitt et Fils, Steiner, and Thuillier.
