Art Quilts
and Dolls by Betty Resch
Betty Resch of rural Joplin lived in Independence, Missouri for 40 years, working as an interior designer and custom draper. When friends tried to interest her in quilting, she said that she could never be a traditional quilter. Piecing together identical blocks just "bored me stiff, " she exclaimed. However, her talent with fabric and needlework eventually led her in a different direction--art quilts. She creates one-of-a-kind works of art by combining fabric, embroidery, beads, paint, and other embellishments to construct pictures that express ideas or evoke emotions. Also on display are some of her handmade fabric dolls, some of which depict actual people.
